Veteran Actor James Brolin Voices Villain Zurg in ‘Lightyear’

LOS ANGELES — James Brolin has worked in television and film for over 60 years now. And he loves what he does.

Brolin’s latest role takes him into the world of animation, lending his voice to Zurg in the Disney Pixar film, “Lightyear.”

Hard to believe, but Brolin once ran away from the cameras because he didn’t want to be in front of them.

“In high school, I couldn’t give a reading report. I used to sit shaking. And I walked into a play once. And we rehearsed and rehearsed, and then on the night of the play, I didn’t I wasn’t introduced. I couldn’t get up there, not in front of all these people,” Brolin said. “I’m still not very good standing in front of a microphone in front of an audience.”

Brolin began acting professionally in films and on television in the early 1960s, finally going gold in 1969 alongside Robert Young in the television medical drama “Marcus Welby, MD.”

“He was a know-it-all,” Brolin says of his character on the show. “And actually, I think that’s what made this show so successful is that he was always annoyed to say to the old man, ‘you haven’t even read the…’ and “You haven’t been to school in 40 years. And I just got out. So obviously I know all the latest stuff, right?”

Brolin turns 82 next month – and he thinks he’s now spent around 10,000 days on various sets over the years.

“And each of those days has been close to the best day of my life,” Brolin said. “I have never missed a day of work, whether I was sick or not. So I have to take advantage of it.”
