Maher and Roe named Southland Conference Football Players of the Week

HAMMOND, Louisiana – After a shutout win at Nicholls and a win from behind at Louisiana Tech, Haylli’s Roe Deer and Nadine maher were named the Southland Conference player of the week for the University of Southeast Louisiana women’s soccer team, the league office said on Tuesday.

Roe, a sophomore, was Southland’s defensive player of the week, highlighted by her game-winning goal in the Lady Lions’ 2-1 victory (5-5-1, 3-2-1 Southland) over Louisiana Tech Sunday. The Humble, Texas native scored in the 60e minute across to nearly 30 meters to give SLU the lead for good.

Roe is the second SLU defenseman to receive the league’s weekly defensive honor this season with the seniors Darby Gillette (September 21).

Maher, a senior, was named conference goalie of the week after leading the Lady Lions to a shutout Friday at Nicholls, 1-0. Ireland Dublin faced 16 shots in both games against Nicholls and Tech with four saves recording their second shutout of the season. Maher, the reigning MVP of the Southland tournament, has allowed just five goals in the last seven matches.

Tuesday marks the second time Maher has won the award in his career. The Lady Lions goalkeeper also received the honor last season (March 30) with her teammate Dalton fish after SLU recorded back-to-back road shutouts to UIW and Abilene Christian.

Roe, Maher and the Lady Lions will be back in action Friday at home against McNeese (8-3-1, 5-1-0 Southland) at 7:05 pm
