A woman has been shocked to learn from police that she was raped in her sleep after footage of her was found during a separate investigation into her attacker.

The dastardly act of council employee Alan Spraggon had remained his sordid secret until his devices were seized by officers investigating possible voyeurism. He had used a camcorder to record himself abusing the woman as she slept.

When officers told the woman what had happened to her all those years ago, she was devastated and couldn’t understand what she was being told. Spraggon, 58, of Michaelgate, Byker, Newcastle, denied the rape but was found guilty by jurors on what a judge called “overwhelming evidence” and has now been jailed for seven years.

Prosecutor Paul Cleasby told Newcastle Crown Court: “When the police visited her her life was turned upside down forever. Information was passed to her which was devastating. She was unable to process what we told him.

“It became apparent that she had been the victim of rape. He had the audacity to record the despicable act. “She was asleep and vulnerable because she was sleeping. He raped her without her knowledge.”

In addition to the prison sentence, Spraggon was told he had to sign the sex offender register indefinitely.

Judge Tim Gittins told her: “She was asleep and knew nothing, at the time, of your despicable act. You didn’t have the strength and the will or the kindness to plead guilty and she was forced to relive it before the jury.

“Anyone who heard him testify would have been aware of the enormous distress caused by this. This is an old offense, but the damage you have caused is new and raw for your victim.

“It was a short-lived incident. The sheer face of the tape was heinous and you didn’t destroy it, you kept it for about 20 years. It was recovered by the police during their scrutiny after your arrest for contempt of public decency in an act of upskirting.”

Spraggon has not faced any allegations in the case for which he was originally arrested and has no previous convictions. The court heard that he had not distributed the recording of the rape.

Shaun Routledge, defending, said Spraggon worked hard for a local asbestos removal council and supported his family.

After the case, Detective Jonathan Askew said: “I absolutely want to salute this woman’s bravery and her unwavering strength throughout this case. Have an officer show up completely unannounced at your door for you to say that you were raped 20 years ago while sleeping and that the man responsible filmed it is simply incomprehensible.

“Spraggon is a despicable sexual predator and has shown no remorse for his actions. I just hope today’s outcome has given the victim the closure needed to move on with his life.”

Debbie Breen of CPS North East said: ‘It was only by chance that officers discovered the footage of this not-recent rape during a search of Spraggon’s home. It was clear from the footage that his victim had taken no active part in the sexual act and, when questioned by the police, she was completely unaware that Spraggon had even carried out the attack or filmed it.

“Obviously this has been particularly distressing for the victim. We have worked closely with the police to build a solid case against Alan Spraggon and we sincerely hope that his sentencing today will bring some comfort to his victim.

Full Name: Tasha Sims

What office are you looking for? DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder

What offices, if any, have you already held? I was a public servant for the DeKalb County government for over 14 years. I’m also district secretary for the DeKalb County Forest Preserve. In addition, I have also been appointed and currently sit at:

Public Buildings Commission, Secretary of the Volunteer Center Board of Directors, Kingston Friendship Center Board of Directors, Kingston United Methodist Church Board of Directors.

City: I come from Sycamore. My husband and I own our home and raise our children in Kingston Township.

Occupation: Executive Assistant for DeKalb County Government

Education: I graduated from Sycamore High School and earned an Associate’s degree in Office Systems from Kishwaukee Community College.

I have also successfully completed: Sycamore Chamber’s Leadership Academy, NIU Civic Leadership Academy, National Association of Counties (NACo) High Performance Leadership Academy

Campaign website: https://simsforcountyclerk.com

What would be your top three priorities over the next four years?

Maximize voter registration and voter turnout efforts by using various forms of media to educate the voting public about the registration process, information about upcoming elections, and voter responsibilities. While providing the best possible services by organizing efficient, fair, honest and impartial elections at minimum cost.

I would like to develop and strengthen relationships with Election Judges as well as other local government units in DeKalb County. Using my experience and understanding of county government, I want to lead the way in what good government is, how public organizations should be managed and how they should act to meet the needs of citizens. I want every resident who comes in contact with the Clerk/Recording Officer’s office to feel comfortable with the process and I want all staff to be proud to work for the county.

Taxes are a major concern raised by local voters. What are you doing in your role to reduce the tax burden on residents?

Everything done at the office is done in accordance with the compiled laws of Illinois. The County Clerk/Recorder’s office operates using state-imposed fees, which removes much of the burden from taxpayers. I understand the county budget process. Maintaining a conservative budget and working within that budget is very important to me. I want to make sure that the office uses the best suppliers who offer the best competitive prices. I am also someone who is always looking for efficiency not only in one department but in the whole organization. Finally, I sometimes understand that doing something “in-house” can be an extra burden or take up extra time for staff. However, if it’s more economical and we have more control over the outcome, I think the task should be done by staff rather than outsourced.

In your opinion, what level of confidence do voters have in local elections? What drives this trust or lack of trust?

Despite national media reports, I believe most voters in DeKalb County are confident in the safety and integrity of our local election process. I know that the DeKalb County vote count security is hosted on a computer that is not connected to the network and therefore cannot be accessed from the outside. The DeKalb County Elections Office within the Office of the Clerk/Records Officer has an excellent track record of conducting very secure, accessible and fair elections. I have seen firsthand how dedicated the election judges and staff are to ensuring that every election in this county is conducted with the utmost integrity and that is a definite area of pride.

If you could redo one decision made by the county clerk over the past four years, what would it be and why?

I am aware of past concerns regarding last minute registrations and voter access. I think it’s important to educate the public and students about their responsibilities when it comes to voting. I also believe that all decisions are learning experiences, good or bad. The staff in the Registrar/Archivist’s office are all experienced and very knowledgeable. It would be an honor for me to work alongside them and use each of their unique abilities to continue to make the best decision possible for the residents of DeKalb County.

In addition to elections, the county clerk’s office handles a myriad of functions. What do you bring to the table that your opponents don’t?

Live.

I started my career in the clerk’s office a little over 14 years ago. I have been cross-trained in all aspects of the office, from registration to vital records, to tax extension and elections. I am heavily involved in county council proceedings, declarations of economic interest and have been a Passport Acceptance Officer for 12 years.

I am proud of my courage and my work ethic.

I have found that moving around in my various positions has provided me with incredible opportunities to be able to understand not only how the Clerk’s Office operates, but how the entire government of DeKalb County essentially operates within and outside the outside. I spent hundreds of hours in county meetings acting like a sponge and soaking up all the history and information I could possibly absorb. After all these years, I now feel confident, prepared and more than ready to serve the citizens of DeKalb County.

It’s my house.

I was born and raised in DeKalb County. We are raising our family here. My heart is here. I am fully involved and I really want to make everyone proud to live in this great riding.

EVANSVILLE, Indiana – Indiana State Softball hit four home runs in a 12-4 win Wednesday afternoon at Cooper Stadium to earn a series win over Evansville.

The Sycamores (22-23, 9-12) finish the series with 30 runs on 35 hits, including eight homers en route to a pair of run-rule victories to take the series over the Purple Aces (23-21, 8 – 13).

The action
Evansville started the game off on the right foot at home plate, taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning after a pair of solo shots in the first two innings out of Cassi Newbank which started for the Sycamores. Newbanks settled in, ending his outing with five strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

At the top of the second, Lexie Siwek recorded his 100th career hit with a left-sided single.

Olivia Patton led the third inning with a single out of third base that set up the Sycamores for a four-run frame. With two out in the inning, Cassie Tomerson drew a walk which was followed by a Annie Tokarek single to center field. Patton and Thomerson would come in to score because of an Ace throwing error that tied the game at two. Lexie Siwek followed Tokarek with an RBI brace to put Indiana State ahead 3-2. Danielle Henning capped the score in the inning with an RBI single to score Siwek to extend Sycamore’s lead to 4-2.

Effectiveness of active learning with laptops, tablets and paper

A look at the three main note-taking options for students – typing on laptops, writing on tablets with a stylus, and using a simple pen and paper – reveals the key advantages and challenges of each to support the active learning.

Laptop : Typing on a laptop is fast, notes are easy to share, and backups are available if notes are destroyed or lost. The downside of note taking on laptops is that students often type their notes mechanically, resulting in the lowest learning retention rate.

Numerical tablets : In response to the pandemic, more schools have provided tablets to students. Only California has made internet-connected tablets available almost a million students. Tablets are portable and easy to use, even for young children, and notes taken on the tablets can be saved and easily shared. Content organization and editing can be customized, and apps and programs are available to encourage creativity.

Paper: This “technology” is how students have taken notes for centuries, so the methods and formats are deeply embedded in the education system. The effectiveness of writing notes on paper has been extensively researched and results show that this method provides high retention rates. Paper-based note taking is also inexpensive, portable, flexible, and less affected by distractions. On the other hand, paper notes are easily lost or damaged, content is difficult to edit and personalize, and the format cannot be embedded in digital assets or links.

5 Digital Note-Taking Strategies for Active Learners

The real benefit of any note-taking technology comes down to whether the tool engages students in active learning. Note taking as a form of active learning encourages students to pay attention by watching, listening, or reading content, and then actively processing the information. Students use their notes to make information their own, regardless of how the information takes shape – through words, pictures, graphs, diagrams, annotations or other methods.

Technology has expanded the limits of note-taking tools while retaining their learning benefits. For example, using styluses on tablets and Chromebooks adds new options for taking notes. Styluses also help students overcome some of the learning challenges they face when using these devices. Whether it’s passive note-taking on laptops, the difficulty of writing with fingers on tablets, or the tendency of paper to get lost or damaged, innovative tools bring new solutions.

DISCOVER: CoSN2022 experts share accessible and inclusive learning solutions.

There are many ways for students to engage in active learning with the support of these tools.

1. Broaden the learning context: Using digital tools, students can simultaneously record a lecture, include links to presentation slides, and easily connect the dots between past and current lessons.

2. Copy visual cues: Visual cues can include charts, graphs and tables or an overview of the topic. When students annotate or draw these visual aids, they can better remember the emphasis placed on certain concepts and ideas.

3. Develop handwriting skills for active learning: Handwriting has been linked to reading readiness, better composition skills, and better academic achievement. For younger students in particular, note-taking tools like digital pens allow learners to develop and strengthen their handwriting and fine motor skills while interacting with technology.

4. Take advantage of breaks: When educators take breaks during direct instruction, students can review and rework their notes. During these breaks, students using digital tools can easily add, move, or edit sections of their notes.

5. Easily access information: Educators can help students take notes by providing handouts to follow during class. If digital note taking is encouraged in the classroom, these materials can be distributed digitally and easily opened on tablets. Students can write directly on the worksheet with a stylus, a process that has been shown to help students learn and retain information.

Digital note taking can create new learning opportunities for K-12 students, combining the benefits of hand-held note taking for active learning and integrating technology into the environment of today’s modern class. Digitally transformed note-taking strategies help educators learn essential writing skills, encourage active learning, and promote greater student achievement.
